Alumni Spotlight

Klein Global Opportunities (GO), formerly known as Study Away, provides opportunities in the U.S. aninternationally for all students through academic and practical experience. We aim to assist students in becoming influential leaders and empowered global citizens. Programs range from ten days to semester long. Klein GO programs are designed to not only enhance a student’s marketability in the workplace, but to also cultivate their global perspective in a growing multicultural environment. Through guidance and expertise, we encourage our community to propose and participate in international and domestic experiential learning.

When and where did you study away?
For my junior year (2015-2016), I managed to study abroad for both semesters. During the Fall ’15 semester I studied in London and for Spring ’16 I studied in Tokyo. Studying abroad has helped me a lot both professionally and personally. My main reason for studying abroad was to establish an international network to allow me to have more job opportunities in the future.

Are there lessons you’d consider invaluable from your experience?
Today we’re fortunate enough to read articles, look at photos and watch videos on different regions. While this is great, it’s not the same as having first hand experience of interacting with different cultures. It makes a huge difference once you can actually interact with another culture rather than just obtain information about it through another platform.

Where are you now?
I’m currently based in the NYC area working as a freelance visual editor.

How has your experience guided your career path?
While studying abroad, I met a lot of talented and unique people that I’m still in contact with today. Having been able to meet these people first hand has helped shape my career path and I continue to be very thankful to have had the opportunity to meet them.

How do you feel studying away helped you get where you are today?
I knew studying abroad would be a challenge and something I should do, but I didn’t realize how much of an impact it would have on my life. Studying abroad helped jumpstart my career both before and after graduation. I graduated from Temple a little less than a year ago but I’ve been able to work with companies such as Boiler Room, GQ, Nylon Japan, Champ magazine and others.

Advice to current students studying away and/or prospective students considering doing so?
Studying abroad can be daunting at first but once you commit and take the risk, it has a high reward. It becomes easier once you settle into your new home and it will always be an unforgettable experience.
