Klein Global Opportunities (GO), formerly known as Study Away, provides opportunities in the U.S. and internationally for all students through academic and practical experience. We aim to assist students in becoming influential leaders and empowered global citizens. Programs range from ten days to semester long. Klein GO programs are designed to not only enhance a student’s marketability in the workplace, but to also cultivate their global perspective in a growing multicultural environment. Through guidance and expertise, we encourage our community to propose and participate in international and domestic experiential learning.

When and where did you study away?
I studied away in South Africa during the summer of 2017. During that time, we lived in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
What was your program like (structure, people, cultural experience, etc)?
The South Africa program consisted of field work and reporting assignments. There was a group of ten students who went on the trip. We visited various areas of South Africa as a group and reported on things happening. Some students reported on crime and poverty, some students reported on LGBT issues – we had the freedom to pick topics that were of interest to us. We could also report using various platforms. I chose to use video in order to tell stories since I want to work in the television industry. When we were not working on projects, we had time to explore Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Where are you now? What do you do?
I am currently interning for Good Morning America in New York City. I work in the field and series department, which handles all of the pre-produced content for the show. I get to help with script writing, research, and gathering elements for various stories.
How do you feel studying away help you get there (if at all)?
Studying abroad helped me get out of my comfort zone and try something completely new. After this experience, I was eager to try other things, like looking for internships outside of the Philadelphia area. Studying abroad gave me a new sense of confidence to push myself to be the best version of myself.
Advice to current students studying away and/or prospective students considering doing so?
Studying abroad is an awesome opportunity to see a part of the world that you wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to visit. This opportunity was so special for me because it allowed me to work on my reporting skills and also travel to a new and exciting place. I would encourage everyone to study abroad during their college career.
